Madeline Adams has been performing simply as Madeline for the last decade. As a teenager she relocated from her hometown of Athens, Georgia to Bloomington, Indiana to work with the punk label Plan-It-X Records (Japanther, Against Me, Defiance, Ohio). After a few years and many punk tours Madeline moved back home to work with Orange Twin Records releasing several albums in collaboration with Phosphorescent, the Athens’ based Elephant 6 Collective (Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, Nana Grizol), Phil Elverum (Mt. Eerie) and Karl Blau (The Microphones).

Madeline, "Black Velvet"
This is the preorder of Madeline's newest, "Black Velvet". This includes your choice of CD or LP (with download code). It will ship as soon as items arrive from the plant.
Madeline and the Black Velvet band recorded Black Velvet in between national and international tour dates. Inspired by Neil Young's producer David Briggs' work, Madeline followed the strategy of On The Beach and Tonight's the Night - recording whenever and wherever they could find a couple of microphones, and focusing on capturing the energy of a live show. Black Velvet sounds like an Arthur Russel record one minute, all bedroom pop and private crooning, while turning around and twisting into dark Jefferson Airplane-esque psychedelia the next. Madeline's signature Karen Carpenter/Neko Case meets The Carter Family southern ballads still make an appearance with lyrics about everything from Johnny Cash's career as heaven's angel barber to the joy of talking cops out of DUIs. Black Velvet is one of those albums you can see while you hear; a mental music video for every song. Madeline has finally and fearlessly let her mind, mouth and heart open far enough for everyone to get a good look and the results are nothing short of thrilling.

Presented in (mostly) reverse-chronological order, the songs on B-sides. Opening track "What Little Girls Do" is a simple acoustic-guitar-and-vocals demo from Madeline's 2009 album White Flag, released on Athens' prestigious Orange Twin label. It strips things down to just guitar and vocals, which is how Madeline's always shined. "Diving Boards" is a wistful, swingy tune also recorded during the White Flag sessions but written back in '04. It bridges '60s folk and cheery '50s-style songs, and could give Nellie McKay a run for her money; Madeline ultimately decided it was too whimsical and left it off the album. "30 Days" gives listeners a stripped-down version of Madeline at her most morose, multi-tracking her vocals for a tune that sits alongside some of her other tunes of boozing, loving and regretting. A favorite at her live shows, it's never been released until now.

Madeline, "The Slow Bang"
Athenian Madeline Adams' first recordings happened in the afternoon when she got done with high school. She played shows around her hometown of Athens, GA before she was old enough to buy cigarettes. Since then, four more records and countless tours. "The Slow Bang" is a gem.
Originally released in 2006, Madeline's "The Slow Bang", is produced by Phosphorescent’s Matthew Houck, whose ghostly piano and laid-back, well-placed percussion accompanies Adams’ own uniquely simple finger-plucked guitar, setting an intimate stage for the heart-breaking work of this southern siren. Picture the kind of summer heat that you have to fend off with bourbon and porch sitting, then layer that on top of the strawberry sweet voice of Madeline trying to get past the precociousness of youth.
